Astrophysical water masers : Line profiles analysis

چکیده
The changes in the spectral line profile of the 22 GHz H 2 O maser are calculated as a function of emerging maser flux. We address not only the narrowing and re-broadening of the maser lines, but also the deviations of Gaussian symmetry as a result of the various hyperfine components of the 22 GHz maser line. Non-LTE models of the H 2 O maser transition, including hyperfine structure and cross-relaxation, are compared with high spectral resolution Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) observations of the H 2 O masers in the circumstellar envelopes (CSEs) of a sample of late-type stars. This yields estimates on the thermal width in the maser region as well as the emerging maser flux and thus the level of saturation. We also discuss the effect of a velocity gradient along the maser path on the line widths and shapes of the line profile and the effect of the geometry of the maser region. We find that the typical velocity shift along the maser path is of the order of 1.0 km s −1. The effect of this shift on the shape of the maser spectrum is difficult to distinguish from the effect of the hyperfine components.

Gaussian Spectral Line Profiles of Astrophysical Masers
Calculations are performed to demonstrate the deviations from Gaussian that occur in the spectral line profiles of a linear maser as a result of the amplification process. Near-Gaussian profiles are presented for bright, interstellar 22 GHz water masers obtained from high resolution Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) observations of W3 IRS 5. For the profiles to be so close to Gaussian, the calcul...
متن کاملA search for water masers toward extrasolar planets
Context. Water is the most common triatomic molecule in the universe and the basis of life on Earth. Astrophysical masers have been widely studied in recent years and have been shown to be invaluable probes of the details of the environment in which they are found. Water masers, for instance, are often detected toward low-mass star-forming regions. Doppler radial-velocity surveys have detected ...
متن کاملA full nine-dimensional potential-energy surface for hydrogen molecule-water collisions.
The hydrogen and water molecules are ubiquitous in the Universe. Their mutual collisions drive water masers and other line emission in various astronomical environments, notably molecular clouds and star-forming regions. We report here a full nine-dimensional interaction potential for H2O-H2 calibrated using high-accuracy, explicitly correlated wave functions. All degrees of freedom are include...
متن کاملSUPERMASSIVE BLACK HOLES IN GALACTIC NUCLEI Observational Evidence and Some Astrophysical Consequences
Abstract. I review the status of observational determinations of central masses in nearby galactic nuclei. Results from a variety of techniques are summarized, including ground-based and space-based optical spectroscopy, radio VLBI measurements of luminous water vapor masers, and variability monitoring studies of active galactic nuclei. I will also discuss recent X-ray observations that indicat...
متن کاملTheory and Extragalactic Masers
Theoretical research on extragalactic masers (and hence this review) is almost entirely directed toward 22 GHz water masers in circumnuclear disks with the focus being the near ideal masing disk at the nucleus of the galaxy NGC4258. The discussion here is organized around (1) the excitation and conditions for the masers, (2) the spatial and spectral appearance of the maser emission, and (3) the...
